A Brazilian tourist tragically found dead after falling into a ravine while hiking near Indonesia’s Mount Rinjani. Juliana Marins, 26, initially fell during a group hike early on Saturday, alerting rescuers who heard her cries for help. Despite her survival after the fall, rescue efforts faced major setbacks due to the rugged terrain and dense fog. Efforts to locate Marins over the next few days were challenging, and her family reported that although she was spotted moving at first, rescuers struggled to reach her.

Marins was part of a hiking group when the accident occurred at around 06:30 local time. According to a fellow hiker, the trail conditions were tough, and visibility was severely limited, increasing the risks associated with the climb. As rescuers utilized drones and followed visual reports, they struggled to pinpoint her exact location. By Sunday morning, footage indicated she had moved from her original spot, creating further confusion for the search teams.

After efforts were halted due to adverse weather conditions, the search was resumed on Tuesday with Indonesian rescue officials stating that they had descended 600 meters down a steep ravine to finally locate her body. Although it was confirmed she did not survive, the recovery of her remains has been complicated by the ongoing bad weather conditions. With a large team of about 50 rescue workers participating, the operation has been marked by cautious attempts to secure her body safely.

This tragic event highlights the inherent dangers posed by hiking on Indonesia's renowned but perilous volcanic terrain. Mount Rinjani draws thousands of adventurers every year, but its risks have previously claimed lives—including another tourist just last month. Juliana's family has expressed their deep sorrow and raised concerns regarding the safety of the trails, questioning why the area was not closed after her tragic fall.
