A Brazilian tourist, Juliana Marins, has been found dead after falling off Mount Rinjani, an active volcano in Indonesia. Marins, 26, fell while hiking with friends early Saturday morning. Initial rescue attempts were thwarted by treacherous terrain and poor visibility, despite her screams being heard by rescuers. After locating her body on Tuesday, search teams reported that they faced difficulties in retrieving it due to adverse weather conditions.

Marins had been exploring Southeast Asia before her hiking expedition on Lombok Island. She and a group of fellow hikers began their trek at approximately 06:30 local time and encountered slippery paths and foggy conditions. After her fall, drone surveillance revealed her in distress but she could not be reached in time.

Rescue operations were extensive, involving around 50 personnel as they navigated steep ravines in challenging conditions. Authorities noted that visibility issues posed significant risks to both rescuers and the operation itself. Tragically, her body was located 600 meters off the hiking path in a deep ravine after days of searches, but inclement weather has delayed the retrieval process.

The incident raises alarms about the safety measures in place on the hiking trails, especially those leading to Indonesia’s famous volcanoes, where several accidents have occurred recently. Marins' family expressed gratitude for the support received during the rescue effort but voiced concerns regarding safety protocols on such trails where the event took place.
