At the White House on Thursday, Nov. 5, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump called for continued cooperation between Russia and Ukraine after her role in brokering a six‑day ceasefire in the Oleshky region of southern Ukraine’s Kherson province.
The gathering brought together representatives from both sides, including Kremlin special envoy Kirill Dmitriev and Ukrainian lawmaker David Arakhamia, who spoke in favour of further humanitarian outreach.
She explained that her work began in September through her representative, Marc Beckman, after learning of the humanitarian crisis in Oleshky. Both Russian and Ukrainian officials signed written agreements recognizing the First Lady as an exclusive intermediary, leading to the ceasefire agreement on Oct. 23.
According to Yonhap’s report, she said:
"Every significant transformation begins with a small spark," she said. "Ignite hope, foster cooperation and brighten a path toward lasting peace."
During the six‑day truce, civilians in the Oleshky district received much-needed food and medical supplies, and ceasefire patrols were deployed to ensure safety. The agreement was said to have set a precedent for broader regional stability.
Premier Vladimir Putin’s envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, clarified that President Putin had personally instructed the local military and civilian authorities to enforce the ceasefire. He also thanked the First Lady for her mediation role.
Ukrainian lawmaker David Arakhamia praised the initiative, saying it "paves the way for continued humanitarian efforts". He echoed the First Lady’s call for sustained cooperation between the two nations.
Trump mentioned that she had written personal letters to both President Putin and President Zelensky, asking their representatives to deliver them and reinforcing her commitment to a humanitarian approach over conflict. She emphasized, "We have chosen humanity over war," and expressed hope that the local ceasefire would inspire a broader peace that endures beyond temporary arrangements.
The story was echoed by BBC, NBC, and Al Jazeera, all reporting that the White House event highlighted the limited but meaningful progress made in the Kherson region and underscored the First Lady’s role as a mediator in the conflict.
In closing, the First Lady urged both sides to build on the Oleshky ceasefire's successes, stating that "humanity over war" must guide future policy decisions as they work toward lasting peace in the region.
