In brief

Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova says both sides observed a six‑day ceasefire in Oleshky, enabling aid delivery and voluntary evacuations. Ukrainian reports, however, allege that Russian troops used the pause to rotate units and bolster defenses, raising doubts about the truce’s purpose. Continued humanitarian assistance remains critical for town residents under Russian control.

In the frontline town of Oleshky, on the left bank of the Dnieper River opposite Ukraine’s Kherson, a humanitarian ceasefire was announced that ran from Tuesday to Sunday. The pause was called the "silence regime" and was meant to allow aid to enter the town and for residents to leave voluntarily, according to statements from Moscow.

Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova posted on the state‑run social‑media platform MAX on Sunday that "all obligations were observed by both sides. This made it possible to deliver aid to the residents and ensure a safe, voluntary departure for those who decided to leave the city," she said. Lantratova added that there are still residents in Oleshky who need help and that humanitarian missions should continue.Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova, Russian state media

The town has been under Russian control since February 2022. The ceasefire was intended to ease civilian suffering and offer a brief window of calm in a fighting zone that remains subject to artillery exchanges and sporadic shelling.

Ukrainian Allegations of Russian Use of Pauses for Military Gain

Contrasting with the Russian government’s description, Ukrainian officials have accused Russian forces of abusing the ceasefire to conduct internal rotations and strengthen defensive positions. According to a Ukrainian military statement released 12 hours earlier, Russian troops used the humanitarian pause to "rotate units, strengthen defences and expand logistics" in the occupied area.

The Ukrainian claim, derived from a publication on the Ukrainian website pravda.com.ua, suggests that the pause served less as a humanitarian relief and more as a tactical advantage for Russian forces.

These contradictory accounts emerge as Oleshky’s population continues to suffer from infrastructural damage, displacement, and limited access to basic services such as food, water, and medical care. Both sides have stated that humanitarian aid deliveries were carried out during the six‑day window, but questions remain about the extent to which civilians could truly benefit given alleged militarization of the pause.

While the Russian and Ukrainian statements both describe a six‑day truce aimed at aid delivery and voluntary evacuation, the Ukrainian narrative adds a layer of concern about the misuse of the pause for military reinforcement. The situation underscores the fragility of ceasefire agreements in frontlines that remain contested and heavily militarized.

International observers and aid groups have called for sustained humanitarian access, noting that Oleshky still remains in need of continued support. As the next window of calm approaches, the international community watches closely to ensure that the city’s residents can receive the assistance they require without further complications from the broader conflict.
