In brief
As the residents of Mandalay grapple with the aftermath of a major earthquake, volunteer rescue workers are desperately searching for survivors among the ruins. The situation is compounded by existing tensions from a military regime and ongoing civil unrest.
In Mandalay, Myanmar, the aftermath of a powerful earthquake is unfolding as volunteer rescue teams work tirelessly, racing against time to uncover survivors trapped under the debris. This catastrophic event struck at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time on Friday, and it marks one of the most severe earthquakes to impact the area in a century. Volunteers, many traveling from surrounding cities, are faced with the daunting task of searching through destroyed apartments, monasteries, and mosques.“We are trying our best with what we have,” said Thaw Zin, a volunteer rescuing survivors from the rubble. The obstacles they face are immense, including downed power lines, severed roads, and a lack of necessary equipment. The Myanmar military junta has declared a state of emergency in six regions, which include areas controlled by rebels that are already struggling with limited communication due to internet outages and a growing number of displaced persons.Among those affected, Su Wai Lin managed to escape the quake with her husband and mother-in-law. However, her husband bravely returned to save their 90-year-old neighbor, highlighting the human spirit of solidarity amid disaster. Tragically, the earthquake also resulted in the collapse of Mandalay’s iconic Maha Myat Muni Pagoda, worsening the emotional toll on the beleaguered community. As hope diminishes with each passing hour, the city of Mandalay continues to rally together in an effort to rescue those trapped and rebuild after this harrowing experience.
