In brief
As President Trump's administration tightens legal immigration, a new AP-NORC poll shows that more Americans now believe that legal immigrants benefit the economy. In contrast, perceptions of illegal immigration remain largely unchanged, with worries about crime and welfare burdens persisting. The poll also indicates a notable decrease among Republicans who support reducing legal immigration.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A new survey reveals that as the Trump administration implements stricter restrictions on legal immigration, public opinion is shifting. More U.S. adults now perceive legal immigrants as beneficial to the nation compared to the previous year, with increased acknowledgment of their contributions to economic growth and skilled workforce acquisition.
The survey, conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, indicates that the percentage of Americans who believe legal immigration should be reduced has declined since January 2024. Currently, roughly half of Americans believe immigration levels should remain unchanged, while only a quarter advocate for them to be reduced significantly.
Despite tightening immigration policies focused on deportations and increased fees for visa applications, perceptions of illegal immigration have shown little change. Many continue to express concerns about the potential risks associated with undocumented immigrants, particularly regarding crime.
Republican sentiments have also evolved, with a notable reduction from 45% to about 30% of Republicans now saying that legal immigration should decrease. This suggests a broader acceptance of immigration as a cultural and economic asset in the U.S., with 60% of Americans affirming that legal immigrants significantly contribute to economic growth.
This changing perspective is complemented by a cultural appreciation, with nearly half of respondents stating that legal immigrants enrich American culture and values. However, the majority still associate major risks with illegal immigration, indicating a complex relationship with immigration in the United States laid bare by this recent polling data.
