In brief

Mount Lewotobi on Flores Island erupted early Monday morning, resulting in at least ten fatalities and an evacuation of local residents.

At least ten individuals have lost their lives following a catastrophic eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in eastern Indonesia on Monday morning. The volcano erupted at 23:57 local time, unleashing lava and rock debris that impacted villages up to 4 kilometers (approximately 2 miles) from its crater, as reported by the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMG).Hadi Wijaya, a spokesperson for PVMG, confirmed that the destruction has heavily impacted seven villages, with homes suffering from burning and severe damage. In light of the eruption, PVMG has raised the alert status of the volcano to the highest level, indicating that all residents within a 7 km (4-mile) radius should be evacuated.Local officials, including Heronimus Lamawuran, mentioned that evacuation efforts commenced earlier in the day, relocating residents to safer areas approximately 20 km (13 miles) away from the volcano. Footage shared with BBC News depicts the terrifying aftermath, showing residents engulfed in volcanic ash and devastated homes, while also capturing the flames engulfing nearby settlements.Authorities from Indonesia's disaster agency cautioned that the region may face flash floods and cold lava flows in the following days. The local government has declared a state of emergency effective for 58 days, allowing for aid to be directed towards 10,000 residents affected by the disaster.Indonesia’s geographical positioning along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” makes it prone to volcanic activity, and Sunday’s eruption follows a trend of geological disturbances in the area. Earlier this year, in May, an eruption from Mount Ibu on Halmahera Island led to the evacuation of seven communities, underscoring the persistent volcanic risks in the region.
