Powerful earthquake hits Tibet killing 16 people, reports say
A magnitude 7 earthquake has struck a mountainous region of Tibet, killing at least 16 people, according to Chinese state media.
The epicentre was in Baqên County, Nagqu region, on Thursday night, Xinhua reported, citing the local emergency management bureau. The county is 400 km north‑east of Lhasa.
Authorities have declared an emergency and dispatched rescue teams to the area, where 32 more people have been injured.
More than 300 homes collapsed in the affected zone, local reports said, and power in the region was largely cut off.
Rockfall has blocked roads, making it harder for crews to reach the affected areas.
Tibet and Nepal were devastated by massive floods and landslides less than two months ago, caused by a glacier collapse that killed at least 1,400 people; hundreds remain missing.
