In brief

With the inauguration of President Trump, fears loom large in India, a major contributor to illegal migration to the United States. Residents in Mehsana, Gujarat, are expressing their anxieties for families abroad as the threat of mass deportations intensifies.

In a recent visit to a temple in the Mehsana district of Gujarat, families have been seen bearing offerings in hopes for the safety of their relatives who have journeyed to the United States. Many of these migrants, who are now part of a growing Indian diaspora in America, have moved abroad for better opportunities, often leaving behind locked homes and community memorials of those who support their families from afar.According to the Pew Research Center, India ranks among the largest sources of undocumented immigrants to the U.S. Shockingly, an estimated 700,000 undocumented Indians were residing in America as of 2022, placing them third in line after Mexicans and Hondurans. The statistics underscore the urgency of the situation, with approximately 90,000 Indians attempting unauthorized entry to the U.S. in just 2023.While Trump's administration's threats of increased deportations have set off alarms closer to home in Latin America, they have also sent tremors through Indian communities, leaving many uncertain about their loved ones' futures. The escalation of fears has prompted a swell of emotional offerings aimed at temples and community gatherings across India, reflecting deep-seated concern about immigration policies impacting families separated by borders.
