In brief
This Christmas season, the atmosphere in Bethlehem, usually bustling with tourists and festive cheer, is overshadowed by despair over the ongoing Gaza war. Local Christians are grappling with the stark reality as public celebrations have been canceled for the second consecutive year. Reverend Dr. Munther Isaac notes a palpable sadness in the community, reflecting solidarity with those suffering in Gaza.
Pastoral gatherings at the Evangelical Lutheran Church have turned somber, as seen in a recent Nativity where baby Jesus rests atop a pile of rubble, symbolizing the pervasive plight of his followers. Local theologian Dr. Yousef Khouri, connected to families in Gaza, shared heart-wrenching tales of friends and relatives enduring severe hardships—bombardment, starvation, and limited medical resources. The war, ignited by Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023, has wrought dreadful consequences, claiming tens of thousands of lives. Meanwhile, Bethlehem's economy, heavily reliant on tourism, has collapsed, leaving many guides and shopkeepers without work. Abdullah, a local tour guide, laments the absence of visitors, stating that the lack of tourism has stifled life in Bethlehem.Despite these challenges, a community initiative led by Wael Shaer and the Palestine Lions Club strives to reignite the spirit of giving during this Christmas season. They are distributing food parcels to families in need, many of whom are battling dire financial straits due to the ongoing conflict and economic downturn. In this challenging climate, Bethlehem’s Christian community clings to the hope that acts of kindness and solidarity will bring light amid the darkness of their current reality.
