A man attempted to ignite a centuries-old synagogue in East Melbourne on Friday, July 4, 2025, prompting emergency responses from the police and fire services. This incident marks a troubling continuation in a series of anti-Jewish and anti-Muslim events that have escalated since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

According to local authorities, around 20 individuals were present inside the synagogue during the attack, and fortunately, everyone emerged unscathed. Police from Victoria confirmed that firefighters swiftly contained a small blaze which resulted in damage primarily to the synagogue’s front door.

Tensions bubbled over during that same day as demonstrators gathered in Melbourne city center, protesting against perceived excessive security measures in place at recent protests. Reports indicated that a subgroup of these demonstrators ventured to a nearby restaurant, where they allegedly directed derogatory chants towards patrons dining there.

This latest arson attempt follows a prior attack on a synagogue in December, for which no charges have been filed to date. The rising incidents catalyze urgent discourse surrounding communal safety and the escalating hostilities between differing groups in Australia.
