In brief
In light of intensified sanctions following the Ukraine invasion, President Putin assembles BRICS leaders to showcase Russia's global economic ties and his vision for a new world order.
After Russia initiated a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the West responded with extensive economic sanctions aimed at isolating Russia and limiting its access to global financial systems. In an effort to reassert its influence, President Vladimir V. Putin has called together leaders of emerging market nations for a meeting in Kazan, aiming to strengthen alliances against Western pressure. The forum convenes the BRICS group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and has expanded this year to welcome nations such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE. Collectively, these countries encompass nearly half of the global population and represent over 35% of global economic output when adjusted for purchasing power. During this summit, Putin intends to demonstrate Russia’s economic significance while seeking to attract additional nations to a coalition aimed at fostering a new global order that diminishes Western influence. Alexander Gabuev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, suggests that this summit symbolizes Putin's determination to counteract Western dominance, framing the conflict in Ukraine as a critical element in dismantling the existing world order and fostering an alternative."This summit is about Putin punching back," Gabuev remarked, highlighting the meeting as a direct response to the West's actions against Russia. As the geopolitical landscape evolves, this gathering underscores Russia's commitment to forge robust partnerships with other nations, illustrating its resilience and aspiration for a multipolar world.
