April 7, 2025 - China has firmly responded to President Trump's announcement regarding a potential 50% increase on tariffs aimed at Chinese goods. The retaliation from the U.S. was criticized by China's Ministry of Commerce, which did not mention Trump directly but condemned the contention, emphasizing the "blackmail" tactics allegedly employed by the U.S.

According to the statement from the Ministry, the heightened U.S. tariffs signify a misstep and demonstrate a continuous pattern of coercion from the United States. In response, China indicated its unwillingness to accept further tariff escalations, asserting that it would "fight to the end" to protect its interests.

Last week, China implemented its own retaliatory measures by imposing a 34% surcharge on American imports, demonstrating its commitment to a tit-for-tat strategy. If President Trump's threats initiate a rise to a staggering 104% in tariffs, it could severely impact American consumers by escalating costs on a vast array of imported goods, including textiles, electronics, and machinery.

In the wake of these developments, the Chinese government urged the U.S. to eliminate unilateral tariffs and engage in discussions based on mutual respect to resolve disputes peacefully. Despite ongoing efforts, China has faced challenges in eliciting a favorable response from the Trump administration for high-level dialogues that could pave the way for a resolution or summit between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
