In brief

After a series of devastating airstrikes resulting in significant casualties, Israel's Defense Forces have ramped up ground operations within Gaza, marking a worrying escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Israel has expanded its ground operations in Gaza in response to a recent surge of air strikes that reportedly killed over 430 people within just two days, according to the Hamas-operated health ministry. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the start of “targeted ground activities” in the Netzarim Corridor, which separates northern and southern Gaza. This renewed military action signals the collapse of a fragile ceasefire that had remained since January. Additionally, a tragic incident at a United Nations compound in Deir al-Balah resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including one UN staff member. Although the foreign ministry announced an investigation, it denied any responsibility on Israel's part. The Israeli military has issued evacuation orders for areas where operations are underway, including Beit Hanoun in the northern region. These orders have created panic among local families who have faced repeated displacements during the ongoing conflict. Many residents have begun fleeing, carrying their belongings on foot, by cart, or vehicle, as they seek safety from Israeli military activities. In a recent video statement, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz delivered what he termed a “last warning” to Gazans regarding the return of hostages still in Hamas' custody, asserting that 59 hostages remain, with 24 believed to be alive. Katz reiterated calls for the dismantling of Hamas, stating that failure to comply with these demands would lead to "total destruction and devastation".Following the deaths at the UN compound, UNOPS head Jorge Moreira da Silva insisted there was considerable cause for concern, suggesting the explosion was not merely accidental. UN Secretary General António Guterres echoed the call for a thorough investigation into the incident.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the military response, stating it had "resumed combat in full force," adding that any future negotiations would occur "under fire." The recent strikes are reported to be the most intense since the temporary ceasefire and hostage exchanges began on January 19.Attempts to negotiate an extension of the ceasefire have stalled, with ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas complicating the situation further. The conflict intensified dramatically following the October 7, 2023, assault by Hamas, which claimed around 1,200 Israeli lives and led to numerous hostages being taken. In response, Israel launched a military campaign that the Hamas-run health ministry claims has resulted in over 48,500 Palestinian deaths, along with widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure.
