New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and her bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie, have been charged with fraud and corruption amidst allegations of using public funds to facilitate their romantic relationship. The legal action was initiated by prosecutors who claim that the pair has been engaged in unlawful activities since October 2021, while Vappie was part of the mayor's protective detail.
During this period, the duo allegedly vacationed together, misleading city officials by claiming Vappie was on duty while he participated in personal activities. Encompassing both domestic and international travel, they reportedly misused city resources, totaling approximately $70,000, for excursions such as a wine tasting trip to California.
Federal investigators have pointed to the use of encrypted messages on WhatsApp, where the duo supposedly coordinated their activities to evade scrutiny and maintain their misconduct without detection. The relationship may not be illegal, but prosecutors argue it exhibited a broader fraudulent scheme that exploited the mayor's position for personal benefit.
In addition to the fraud charges, Cantrell and Vappie are accused of intimidating staff, misleading FBI agents, and committing perjury regarding their actions. If convicted on any counts, they potentially face significant prison time and hefty fines.
It is noteworthy that LaToya Cantrell made history as the first female mayor of New Orleans when she assumed office in 2018. Currently, she is scheduled for departure from the mayoral office in January 2024. Neither Cantrell nor Vappie has publicly responded to the serious allegations that have emerged.
