In brief
A series of Israeli airstrikes and ground gunfire around Kamal Adwan Hospital led to numerous injuries and fatalities, raising concerns about the humanitarian situation in northern Gaza.
Israeli airstrikes and heavy gunfire erupted early Friday in the vicinity of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Jabaliya, one of the last operational medical facilities in northern Gaza. Hospital director Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya reported that the attacks resulted in the death or injury of many individuals, prompting panic and evacuation orders from Israeli forces.Dr. Safiya described experiencing a barrage of airstrikes targeting the northern and western sides of the hospital, after which intense gunfire began. The morning following the assault revealed chaos, with bodies reportedly lying in the streets surrounding the facility, including four medical staff members among the deceased. The hospital's medical supplies have been nearly exhausted, creating an alarming situation for the overwhelmed healthcare providers. The World Health Organization’s chief representative for the Palestinian territories, Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, added that there was significant bombing near the hospital. He pointed out that an absence of an official evacuation warning prior to the strikes likely exacerbated the panic among those present, contributing to the number of casualties. The Israeli military has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding the incidents in question, leaving many unanswered details surrounding the assault.
