SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) — A severe winter storm swept through New England on Wednesday, bringing hazardous conditions marked by snow, ice, and freezing rain, leading to dangerous driving across the region. Many school districts opted to close or delay classes due to unsafe road conditions caused by the wintry mix. Approximately a tenth of an inch of ice accumulated, often resulting in power outages and exacerbating road hazards, with thousands reported experiencing outages primarily in Maine and parts of Massachusetts.
As the National Weather Service issued winter weather advisories for all six New England states, local authorities highlighted the importance of student and staff safety. With icy conditions forecast during both the morning and afternoon bus routes, ensuring the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, said officials from Maine Regional School Unit 21, based in Kennebunk. Hazardous weather outlooks have been announced for northern areas as forecasts predict a mix of rain and temperature drops could create further dangerous conditions towards the weekend.
Accidents and vehicle spinouts were reported across the states, though no serious injuries have been documented. Logan International Airport in Boston, alongside others, reported numerous aircraft requiring de-icing due to snow and ice. Residents across southern Maine were also advised of potential snow accumulation, with predictions of additional systems bringing more rain and potentially snow starting Friday night into Saturday. Local communities continue to respond as they evaluate conditions and prepare for any weather-related emergencies.
