WhatsApp’s Leadership Shift: Indian FinTech Founder Kunal Shah Takes the Helm
Meta’s chief messaging app WhatsApp has a new boss. In a surprise move announced on Monday, Will Cathcart — who guided the app for nearly seven years — said he would step down from his role.
Cathcart will remain at Meta as part of its leadership team, but Kunal Shah, the founder of Bengaluru‑based fintech start‑up Cred, will take over as head of WhatsApp.
Zuckerberg praised Shah, saying the fintech founder “brings the kind of builder mentality … and global perspective that will serve him well in running the world’s biggest messaging app.”
Cred has raised $900m in investment from Meta, giving the parent company a 20% stake in the company. Shah remains a shareholder and will work alongside Cathcart on WhatsApp.
The change comes as Meta tightens its focus on India, where WhatsApp boasts around 853 million users. The app faces scrutiny over privacy and data sharing with the parent company, prompting calls for stricter regulation.
