Palestinian sources tell BBC that the confrontation escalated into gunfire when an Israeli security guard’s weapon was stolen and he was shot dead. The Israeli Army’s IDF says the guard was struck by a Palestinian who then attacked Israeli hikers. The IDF later reported that a 27‑year‑old soldier died during operational activity and that an Israeli civilian was wounded.
The clash highlights the surge of settler violence that has increased since the start of the Gaza war in 2023. The Palestinian foreign ministry condemned the “massacre”, citing continued encouragement of settler terrorism by the Israeli government.
