West Bank Bloodshed: Six Killed as Tensions Escalate
At least four Palestinians and two Israelis were killed in a sudden shooting in the occupied West Bank, the deadliest such incident in months. The violence erupted in the northern village of Tal, where residents confronted a group of approximately thirty Jewish settlers attacking Palestinian homes before Israeli soldiers arrived.
Palestinian sources tell BBC that the confrontation escalated into gunfire when an Israeli security guard’s weapon was stolen and he was shot dead. The Israeli Army’s IDF says the guard was struck by a Palestinian who then attacked Israeli hikers. The IDF later reported that a 27‑year‑old soldier died during operational activity and that an Israeli civilian was wounded.
The clash highlights the surge of settler violence that has increased since the start of the Gaza war in 2023. The Palestinian foreign ministry condemned the “massacre”, citing continued encouragement of settler terrorism by the Israeli government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed decisive action and dispatched reinforcements to the area near the settlement of Havat Gilad.
Israel has built around 160 settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, housing 700,000 Jews, while 3.3 million Palestinians live in the region. The settlements are deemed illegal under international law, adding another layer of tension to the ongoing conflict.
