Israel's President Isaac Herzog has received a letter from US President Donald Trump formally urging him to fully pardon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu has been standing trial for the past five years on charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in connection with three separate cases. He has denied any wrongdoing.

In the letter, Trump writes that he absolutely respects the independence of Israel's justice system but believes Netanyahu is facing a political, unjustified prosecution.

Herzog's office said he holds Trump in the highest regard, but anyone seeking a pardon must submit a formal request.

Netanyahu later thanked Trump for the incredible support, expressing his desire to continue their partnership in enhancing security and expanding peace.

Since becoming the first serving Israeli prime minister to stand trial in 2020, Netanyahu has faced allegations of receiving gifts from businessmen, exchanging media favors for positive coverage, and promoting favorable regulations for corporate interests.

Trump's advocacy follows recent remarks made during a speech in the Israeli parliament, suggesting Herzog should pardon Netanyahu.

The divided reaction in Israel reflects deeper tensions regarding the legal system's integrity, particularly in light of proposed judicial reforms that sparked significant protests prior to the recent conflict triggered by Hamas.
