The community is in mourning following the tragic death of Dr. Cerina Fairfax, a respected dentist and devoted mother, who police believe was killed by her estranged husband, former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, in a suspected murder-suicide.

Authorities discovered both Cerina, 49, and Justin Fairfax dead in their home in Annandale, Virginia early Thursday morning. They reported that Justin had fatally shot Cerina before turning the gun on himself. The couple was in the midst of a divorce, with Justin recently ordered by a judge to vacate the premises by the end of April.

Cerina Fairfax was well-known for her thriving family dental practice in nearby Fairfax City. Profiles on her practice described her as an avid reader who enjoyed traveling, practicing yoga, and spending quality time with her family and her Vizsla dogs.

Virginia Rep. Jennifer McClellan, a friend of the Fairfax family, characterized Cerina as a loving and dedicated mother who cherished her two teenage children. Cerina Fairfax was a loving and dedicated mother and the rock at the center of her large family, McClellan stated.

Her friend and patient, Terron Sims II, expressed his grief saying that Cerina’s work was more than just a profession; it was a service to others. He emphasized her caring nature and commitment to her patients.

Acknowledged for her excellence in dentistry, Cerina was awarded the title of Outstanding Graduate of the Last Decade by the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry in 2015. Interim Dean Dr. Jeffrey Johnson reflected on her profound influence, stating, Dr. Fairfax embodied the ideals of our profession — dedication to her patients, commitment to growth, and a deep sense of purpose in her work each day.

The dental community has also lauded her philanthropic efforts, with Ryan Dunn, CEO of the Virginia Dental Association noting, Dr. Fairfax loved giving back through volunteer work and contributions to local charities focused on helping those in need. As we remember Dr. Fairfax, we honor the impact she made within her community.

Cerina and Justin first met as students at Duke University and married in 2006. Despite a promising political career for Justin, including a term as lieutenant governor and an unsuccessful run for governor, his profile diminished amid allegations of sexual assault from two women prior to their marriage.

According to court records, the couple had separated nearly two years prior to this incident but were still living together with their children at the time of their deaths, which were reportedly witnessed by the children. The judge overseeing their divorce had commented on the tense atmosphere in their home, stating that it is clear tensions in the Fairfax home have been extremely high for an extended period of time.
