US singer D4vd has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a teenage girl who went missing last year, police say.
The star, whose legal name is David Anthony Burke, was the target of a grand jury investigation into the apparent murder of Celeste Rivas Hernandez, whose remains were found in his Tesla in September.
The Los Angeles Police Department announced on Thursday that the 21-year-old is being held without bail. The case will be presented to the District Attorney's office on Monday.
In a statement to US media, Burke's lawyers asserted his innocence, stating that 'actual evidence in this case will show that David Burke did not murder Celeste Rivas Hernandez.'
They further clarified that no grand jury indictment has been returned and he is held merely under suspicion.
Police previously stated they had arrested Burke 'for the murder of Celeste Rivas'.
Concerns grew following the discovery on September 8 of the 14-year-old's remains, which were found in a Hollywood tow yard, prompting authorities to investigate further.
Investigators discovered her decomposed remains in a cadaver bag within a Tesla registered to D4vd's Texas address. The county's medical examiner stated her body was 'severely decomposed,' and it may have been weeks since her death before being found.
Despite the ongoing investigation, no cause of death has been revealed. A judge previously ordered that the teen's death records be sealed.
Rivas Hernandez, who lived approximately 75 miles from where her body was found, had been reported missing by her family in April 2024. The interest surrounding her death and its potential connection to the singer has generated significant online speculation.
A grand jury commenced hearings in December, but Burke's arrest marks a noteworthy change in the case's trajectory. Further details indicate he was identified as a 'target' of the grand jury investigation and may be subject to a murder charge.
Burke has otherwise been reticent about the investigation, with representatives stating he was cooperating with authorities. Following the discovery of Rivas Hernandez's body, the singer canceled his world tour and withdrew from media exposure, leading to the loss of several endorsements.
More updates are expected as the case progresses, especially concerning Burke's legal standing and any formal charges that may be brought forward.
