OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Doug Martin, a former All-Pro NFL running back, has died after a struggle with police officers who were investigating a home break-in in Oakland, police said Monday.

At the time of his arrest early Saturday morning, Martin became unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at a hospital. He was 36 years old, and the exact cause of death has yet to be determined, pending an autopsy.

The Oakland Police Department reported that Martin was involved in a break-in and that a brief struggle occurred while officers attempted to apprehend him. No further details of the incident have been disclosed.

Originally from Oakland, Martin was a standout high school football player in Stockton before joining the NFL. His former agent, Brian Murphy, revealed that Martin privately battled severe mental health issues that significantly impacted both his personal and professional life.

Murphy stated that Martin's family had sought medical assistance for him prior to the incident. Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Martin fled to a neighbor's home where he was subsequently taken into custody.

“Ultimately, mental illness proved to be the one opponent from which Doug could not run,” Murphy said.

Oakland's mayor, Barbara Lee, extended condolences, stating, We mourn the loss of Doug Martin, an Oaklander who had a distinguished NFL career and tragically passed away... Our condolences are with his family and loved ones.”

Martin was a notable player in the NFL, being drafted 31st overall in the 2012 NFL Draft after an impressive college career at Boise State. He was selected for the Pro Bowl and earned first-team All-Pro honors during his time in the league.

The Buccaneers released a statement expressing deep sorrow, highlighting the lasting impact Martin had on the franchise during his tenure.
