A Russian general has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, officials have said.

Russia's Investigative Committee stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov died on Monday morning after an explosive device placed under his car exploded.

At 56 years of age, Sarvarov was serving as the head of the armed forces' operational training department and marks the third military official to fall victim to bomb attacks in Moscow over the past year.

Initial investigations hint at the possibility that Ukrainian intelligence services might be implicated, although Ukraine has not commented on the incident.

Sarvarov succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, as confirmed by the committee, which has since launched investigations into murder and illegal explosives trafficking.

Authorities have dispatched investigators to the scene, located in a parking area near an apartment building in southern Moscow. Photographs from the aftermath depict a severely damaged white Kia Sorento.

Media reports indicate Sarvarov's prior combat experience in past conflicts including the Ossetian-Ingush conflict, the Chechen wars, and leadership roles in operations in Syria between 2015 and 2016.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been informed of Sarvarov's demise, as stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. This event unfolds amidst a series of high-profile targeted attacks on military officials in Moscow, especially since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Significant recent incidents include the killing of Darya Dugina, the daughter of a nationalist figure close to Putin, and two other generals who met similar fates last year.

This succession of attacks raises alarm about security measures and the ongoing unrest within the region.
