Incident Details

Golfer Tiger Woods has been charged with driving under the influence after a car crash in Florida, police say.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office said the 15-time major champion had also been charged with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.

Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods, 50, had rolled his Land Rover vehicle after clipping a pressure cleaner truck on Jupiter Island on Friday.

The golfer, who had to crawl out of the passenger side of his vehicle, passed a breathalyser test after the crash but refused a urine test.

Authorities also confirmed no-one sustained any injuries in the incident which took place on Beach Road just after 14:00 local time (about 19:00 GMT).

The details surrounding the arrest and Woods' cooperation with police suggest complications, as he was described as trying to avoid self-incrimination but was cooperative overall.

Reactions

US president Donald Trump expressed his concern regarding the incident, highlighting Woods' struggles and calling him an incredible person.

"I feel so badly. [Woods has] got some difficulty. There was an accident. That's all I know," Trump said.

Sheriff Budensiek noted that Woods will remain in jail for eight hours before being released on bond, pending further investigation by the authorities.
