In brief
As the festive season approaches, the atmosphere in Bethlehem is somber, with cancellations of public celebrations and limited religious observances due to the war in Gaza. Local Christians reflect on the tragic circumstances that overshadow what should be a time of joy.
Despite the small town historically known as the birthplace of Jesus, festive cheer remains absent as the town battles the ramifications of the ongoing Gaza war. This year, Bethlehem’s usually vibrant streets lack their typical decorations and visitors, with public celebrations suspended for a second consecutive year due to the humanitarian crisis. Reverend Dr. Munther Isaac from the Evangelical Lutheran Church expresses the sorrow felt across the community: "Bethlehem is a sad town in solidarity with our siblings in Gaza." Instead of joy, church congregations are focused on prayers reflecting the devastation caused by the attacks, illustrated poignantly with a nativity scene portraying baby Jesus on rubble. The humanitarian toll of the Gaza conflict, which has seen over 45,000 fatalities according to reports, resonates deeply within the local Christian community, many of whom have family ties to Gaza. Theologian Dr. Yousef Khouri recounts that his own family members have faced starvation and relentless bombardment, emphasizing the grim reality that goes beyond media portrayals. With tourist activity stalling completely, local workers, including tour guides and souvenir sellers, report financial distress and loss of jobs, leading many families to contemplate emigration due to the perpetuated violence and uncertainties surrounding their future.Nevertheless, community efforts like the Palestine Lions Club are striving to alleviate suffering through food distribution. Wael Shaer, the group's leader, insists on spreading hope and love during this Christmas season. His initiative provides food parcels to those in need, including families grappling with illness and unemployment."A little cheer at Christmas," Shaer reflects, as his group continues its mission to bring comfort amid hardship, reinvigorating the spirit of giving, even in the bleakest of times.
