FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The FBI announced on Wednesday the discovery of a suspicious package outside a gate at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, which contained what they described as 'possible energetic materials'. The analysis of the materials is pending as investigations continue. Energetic materials are known for containing significant chemical energy, which may encompass explosives, fuels, or propellants. The FBI declined to specify the nature of the materials found on Monday near the base's Visitor Center.
Earlier on the same day, the base implemented a shelter-in-place order following an unspecified threat. Base officials took the situation seriously and committed to ensuring the safety and security of the installation, although they refrained from divulging specific security measures taken.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted approximately two hours later; however, officials confirmed that the base remains on heightened alert, classified under Force Protection Charlie, the second-highest military security level. This allows officials to proactively implement deliberate security measures. Personnel were advised to stay alert and to report any suspicious activities.
The U.S. Central Command, stationed at MacDill, oversees military operations in various regions including the Middle East and parts of South Asia. The heightened alert status at the base corresponds to the ongoing tensions associated with the recent war in Iran. Additionally, a tragic incident last week resulted in the death of six crew members from a KC-135 refueling aircraft operating against Iran, three of whom were affiliated with the 6th Air Refueling Wing located at MacDill.
