In brief

Late on Sunday, Ukrainian drones struck two key oil sites in St Petersburg – the city’s main oil terminal and a nearby Ruchyi depot – igniting fierce fires and killing one person. Governor Alexander Beglov confirmed the damage and that at least five were injured. The attack also hit Ozon's logistics centre and a Vkontakte data centre, prompting service outages and emergency responses. Russia’s defence ministry boasted of downing more than 1,000 drones, amid escalating energy infrastructure strikes on both sides of the conflict.

Late on Sunday night, Ukrainian drones struck two vital oil sites in St Petersburg, setting flames ablaze and claiming one life.

The central St Petersburg Oil Terminal and the adjacent Ruchyi depot were hit, Governor Alexander Beglov said. Fires continue to be extinguished, and at least five people have been wounded.

The bombing also damaged Ozon's logistics hub and a Vkontakte data centre, causing disruptions for users in the region.

So far, Ukraine has not publicly commented on the incident, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Moscow had targeted the country’s energy sector 76 times since a proposed ‘energy ceasefire’ last week. Ukraine had paused strikes on Russian oil plants for three days after that announcement, only to resume them earlier this week.

Russia’s defence ministry reported that it shot down more than 1,000 drones over its territory overnight. The governor also noted damage to 12 apartment blocks, two homes and a temporary closure of Pulkovo Airport, with mobile internet disruptions possible.

Both sides are reportedly targeting each other’s energy infrastructure more aggressively as winter approaches, with Russia attacking sites used by Ukraine’s military. Meanwhile, the UN warned that the first two weeks of October were the deadliest for Ukrainian civilians in recent years.

According to Russian officials, Ukraine’s attacks on energy facilities are part of a broader effort to weaken Moscow’s war effort, while Ukraine maintains that these actions are aimed at Russian military targets.
