In brief
A Russian soldier in the Crimea region allegedly opened fire on fellow soldiers and then went on to kill three civilians in Khmelnytske village, leaving four dead and several injured. Regional authorities detained the killer but have not released details on his identity or motives. Ukraine's ongoing conflict and the persistent Russian military presence strain relations, while the international community remains skeptical of Crimea's annexation. The incident raises concerns about security and arrests happen with provisional investigations underway.
Russian Soldier Commits Mass Shooting in Occupied Crimea
Four people were killed in an apparently random gun rampage carried out by a member of the Russian armed forces in Crimea, an area Russia has controlled since 2014.
According to Mikhail Razvozhayev, the regional governor installed by Moscow, the gunman first fired at his own soldiers, killing one and wounding another. He then proceeded to the village of Khmelnytske, where he killed two men aged 71 and 59, and a 64‑year‑old woman. Three other people were injured in the attack.
The attacker has been detained, but officials have not publicly identified him or the military branch to which he belonged. Razvozhayev said investigators are looking into the motive and urged the public not to spread unverified rumours.
The incident highlights ongoing security concerns in Crimea, where a large Russian military presence is frequently targeted by Ukrainian drone and missile strikes. Ukraine’s diplomatic community continues to reject Crimea’s annexation as an occupation of Ukrainian territory.
