Recruiters in Ukraine face increasing violence as citizens resist conscription amid a protracted war.

With the war against Russia entering its fifth year, Ukraine has found it increasingly hard to mobilise men for the front line. The fear of combat and uncertainty about the war’s end have turned many citizens into draft resistors, leading to violent attacks on recruitment officers. The National Police Service reports over 600 assaults on recruiters, including stabbings that left one officer dead. In Lviv, around 200 protesters surrounded officers, smashed and overturned their car while detaining a suspected draft dodger. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the violence, underscoring the turmoil within Ukrainian society.

Ukraine is still struggling to mobilise men to fight as the war against Russia enters its fifth year.

Many citizens fear deployment to the front line and are reluctant to fight in a conflict that seems to have no end.

These attitudes have turned hostile, with recruitment officers being violently attacked.

A recent report from the National Police Service recorded over 600 assaults on recruiters and warned that the aggression is becoming increasingly threatening.

In April, several recruiters were stabbed, one death resulting. In Lviv, about 200 protesters surrounded officers, smashed and overturned their car while they were attempting to detain a suspected draft dodger.

The riot prompted President Volodymyr Zelensky to condemn violence against serving soldiers.
