In brief

A recent migrant boat tragedy near Samos highlights the perilous journey many face in search of safety in Europe.

At least eight individuals, including six children, have tragically lost their lives after a migrant boat capsized near the Greek island of Samos. The Greek coastguard has reported that rescue operations have successfully saved approximately 40 people, with search efforts hindered by strong winds. Authorities were alerted to the disaster by a non-governmental organization, which indicated that around 50 individuals were aboard the ill-fated vessel.Greek Migration Minister, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, expressed his profound sorrow and anger over the incident, pledging to intensify efforts to tackle human trafficking operations that exploit vulnerable migrants. Positioned close to the Turkish coast, Samos has historically been a common landing point for those attempting to reach European shores. This year, Greece has seen a surge in migrant arrivals, with over 50,000 individuals making the perilous crossing by boat, positioning it as the second most frequented route in Europe, following Italy. Although migration numbers had been on a decline since August, a recent uptick has been observed, as reported by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), which noted that around 160,000 migrants have arrived in Europe via sea. Unfortunately, the crisis has also claimed lives, with 2,000 people reported dead or missing during the journey; children account for roughly 23 percent of those arrivals.
