NEW YORK (AP) — Jurors deadlocked in Harvey Weinstein's rape retrial on Friday, resulting in another mistrial for the notable #MeToo case that has already gone to trial three times.
Despite being convicted of various sex crimes in other jurisdictions, the mistrial leaves the New York rape charge unresolved. Prosecutors are deliberating whether to pursue a fourth trial as some jurors indicated they were inclined to acquit Weinstein.
Weinstein, 74, showed little reaction as he was escorted from the courtroom, with his attorneys later stating he was pleased with the outcome. Defense attorney Marc Agnifilo commented, “Maybe it’s not the win that he wanted, but it’s a win, and we’re going to keep fighting,” praising their chances for a successful retrial.
The jury, consisting predominantly of men, evaluated allegations from actress Jessica Mann that Weinstein raped her during a tumultuous relationship in 2013. Weinstein's lawyers contended the encounter was consensual.
On Friday, the judge declared a mistrial after the jury consulted him twice within 90 minutes, indicating their stalemate. Some jurors expressed that they found many inconsistencies in Mann’s account. Juror Josh Hadar stated, regarding the evidence,: “There was enough reasonable doubt,” suggesting a vote for acquittal.
Mann responded to the outcome, emphasizing that it did not diminish the truth of her statements and reasserted her desire for justice amidst public scrutiny. The Manhattan District Attorney praised her bravery and noted discussions would occur regarding the next steps.
Weinstein’s legal troubles stem from a variety of sexual misconduct allegations that came to light in 2017, catalyzing the #MeToo movement. Accusations against him led to criminal charges and subsequent hardships for his career, including a bankruptcy of his film studio.
Mann initially encountered Weinstein at a party in early 2013 and described the incident as having a lasting emotional impact. Despite her ongoing communications with Weinstein after the alleged assault, she ultimately reported the incident to authorities after numerous allegations against him surfaced in the media.
As a prominent figure in Hollywood, Weinstein's trial and related cases will continue to resonate, especially within discussions surrounding accountability for sexual misconduct.
