In brief

Despite an assumed alliance, Moscow and Beijing have refrained from significant intervention in Iran’s recent crisis.

When the hostilities broke out in the Israel-Iran conflict, many expected China and Russia to ride to Iran’s aid, especially given their previously established connections with Tehran. However, the expected solidarity was notably absent. While Iranian forces provided support to Russia in its war against Ukraine through drone and missile sales, the anticipated reciprocal support from Moscow and Beijing never materialized during the recent Israel-Iran confrontations.Instead of launching an urgent response to support Iran amid U.S. military actions targeting its nuclear facilities, both countries limited their reactions to mere condemnations of U.S. aggression. “The reality of this conflict turned out to be that Russia and China didn’t run to Iran’s rescue,” reflected Alexander Gabuev from the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center. His insights suggest that while these nations may have shared interests, their individual national interests reign supreme. The conflict has exposed the limitations of the so-called “axis” of authoritarian states—Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran. Despite having voiced anger and grievances against the United States, these nations emerged as reluctant allies when faced with real conflict scenarios. Gabuev further emphasized the differing conflicts at play, stating that “Each of them is pretty selfish and doesn’t want to get embroiled in the wars of others.” The intricate complexities of international relationships are highlighted, revealing that while nations may find common ground, their fundamental disinterest in interceding on behalf of one another could lead to a reevaluation of their so-called alliances.
