A man who previously owned the assault-style weapon used in the tragic shooting that claimed the lives of eight children in a Shreveport neighborhood is now at the center of an ongoing federal investigation. Court documents released recently revealed that Charles Ford suspects Shamar Elkins, the father of seven victims, stole the firearm from his truck weeks prior to the rampage.

According to Ford's statements to investigators, he noticed the firearm missing around March 9 and confronted Elkins regarding the theft. However, after receiving an aggressive response, Ford chose to drop the matter, as noted in a criminal complaint filed in Louisiana federal court.

Ford currently faces federal charges as he is accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm and providing false statements to federal agents. Upon initial questioning related to the shooting, he denied possessing the weapon.

U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Keller expressed sorrow over Elkins' death, stating, Elkins’ death means that our community will never see him face justice. As investigations continue, Keller hopes that accountability for the firearm’s owner will bring some comfort to the grieving Shreveport community.

Notably, the tragic event unfolded with the deaths of eight children aged between 3 and 11, raising urgent discussions about gun control and community safeguarding. Investigations into the shooting, which left two women injured, still seek clarity regarding the unfolding events and the issue of firearm accountability.

Currently, Ford does not have a lawyer representing him but is expected to qualify for a federal public defender. The implications of this case continue to resonate within the local community.
