A 14‑year‑old pupil was arrested after he fired at a principal and teacher at Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, France, on Monday morning.
The incident, which took place around 10:30 a.m., resulted in non‑life‑threatening injuries to a 53‑year‑old headteacher – who was struck in the leg – and a 37‑year‑old teacher, whose thigh was hit by a bullet.
No students were harmed; the school was evacuated and all pupils were confined safely within seconds, according to Mayor Jean‑Pierre Squillari.
According to French media, the student entered the premises with a gun. He was restrained by staff before police arrived and was immediately detained.
Both broadcaster BFMTV and the newspaper Le Parisien confirmed that the shooting was not linked to current protests over school conditions. Education Minister Édouard Geffray posted on social media that the principal and teacher “were victims of gunshot wounds” and that a pupil was the perpetrator.
Geffray and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez are scheduled to visit the school near Marseille later that afternoon to review the situation.
