Four deaths reported in Mexico City after World Cup victory
A 19‑year‑old woman, a 48‑year‑old woman and a 44‑year‑old man died from suffocation, while a 30‑year‑old man died in an epileptic crisis, following celebrations after Mexico’s 2‑0 win over Ecuador.
City health authorities said emergency teams dealt with three unconscious patients at different locations on Paseo de la Reforma and transported them to hospitals. After first‑aid and CPR, the patients were taken to specialised care, but all four later died.
Over a million people gathered, especially around the Angel of Independence monument, marking Mexico’s first knockout win since 1986. The crowd erupted at the Estadio Azteca and spread fireworks across downtown, some long after the final whistle.
Mayor Clara Brugada conveyed “most sincere condolences” to the families and called for fans to celebrate responsibly, with care and empathy. She urged people watching the game near the monument to look elsewhere because of the already massive crowds.
Mexico now advances to the round of 16, where they will face England, who defeated DR Congo 2‑1.
