WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — In a shocking turn of events, William Stevenson, the former husband of Jill Biden, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson. The charges came to light in a news release issued by authorities on Tuesday, following a domestic dispute reported at their home in late December.

Stevenson, age 77, who was married to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975, failed to post a $500,000 bail after his arrest on Monday. Linda Stevenson, aged 64, was found unresponsive in the living room of their home by police after they responded to a distress call on December 28. Despite life-saving efforts, she could not be revived.

According to her obituary, Linda ran a bookkeeping business and was remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother, as well as a Philadelphia Eagles fan. Notably, her obituary did not mention her husband.

The Delaware Department of Justice conducted a weeks-long investigation leading to Stevenson's indictment by a grand jury. As of now, it is unclear if he has retained legal counsel. Stevenson is also recognized for founding a popular music venue in Newark, known as the Stone Balloon, during the early 1970s.

In a 2024 interview with conservative outlet Newsmax, Stevenson made negative remarks about Jill Biden, describing their divorce as fraught and characterizing her as 'bitter' and 'nasty.' Following their separation, Jill Biden married Senator Joe Biden in 1977, who later became the U.S. President from January 2021 to January 2025.
