Explosive Drone Spotter at Leipzig Airport: Police Deploy Robot

Police at Leipzig/Halle Airport uncovered a drone loaded with an explosive device after an employee spotted it near parked Ukrainian cargo planes earlier this week. The arsenic-laden object was found during a night shift and covered by security cameras.
A specialised robot was dispatched to the airfield to carefully extract the detonator from the device. Once safe, authorities carried out a controlled explosion, neutralising the threat and allowing flights to resume on the northern runway.
The southern runway remains closed for safety checks. In total, German authorities have identified two separate incidents in the last few weeks involving unauthorized drones, one involving a second object that collided with a cargo aircraft and landed in Hanover with minor damage.
Germany’s interior minister Alexander Dobrindt called the incidents a "new level of threat" and urged continued vigilance. He hinted that the investigation might turn over to a possible “competition” that could include foreign powers, though no suspects have yet been named.
Leipzig/Halle Airport is a crucial hub for the German military and NATO allies, serving as a transit point for Ukrainian and Russian aircraft, including Antonov cargo flights for Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines. It also hosts the global logistics group DHL.
Similar alarm has arisen over recent months, with suspicious drones over military bases, energy terminals, seaports and logistics facilities. The police have warned of a potential Russian involvement, which Moscow has denied. Discussions around drone threats tie into a larger context of security breaches, such as a July 2024 incident where a parcel exploded on the ground at the same airport, and alleged Chinese espionage operational activities last year.
As Germany moves in the wake of the war in Ukraine, authorities vow to maintain high alert over drone activity across airfields, military sites and critical infrastructure to reduce the risk of sabotage or terrorist attacks.
