After sealing decisive wins in the New York mayoral election and governor's races in Virginia and New Jersey, it is clear the Democratic Party will be buoyed by a big election night on Tuesday.
It is a far cry from the scenes after last year's presidential election, when the party was left searching for answers after Donald Trump and the Republicans scored a hugely dominant victory.
The results also mark a year until vital midterm elections. So with the picture of the night becoming clearer, here's what we've learned from the results.
1. Democrats get their energy back
The Democrats notched key victories as they swept the first major elections of Trump's second term. There were joyous celebrations at the various candidate headquarters, a stark contrast to the downbeat scenes after the party's bruising 2024 defeat.
Abigail Spanberger won in Virginia, flipping the governorship from Republican, while Mikie Sherrill was elected governor in New Jersey. Both won decisively, securing more than 56% of the vote.
In New York City, Zohran Mamdani beat independent Andrew Cuomo and became the first candidate to pass one million votes since 1969. Ben Rhodes, former deputy national security adviser, noted that Mamdani had significantly changed the electorate by engaging young voters and immigrants.
Mamdani’s victory reflects a larger momentum shift for the Democrats heading into the 2024 elections. As Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin proclaimed, The Democrats are back and we're winning.
2. Cost of living a winning message
Pledging to reduce the cost of living was central to many successful Democratic campaigns. From Mamdani's focus on affordability in New York to similar strategies employed by Sherrill and Spanberger, economic issues dominated voters' concerns.
Exit poll data indicated that for most voters, economy and affordability were paramount, leading to a decisive Democratic showing in New Jersey and Virginia.
This emphasis on affordability may solidify a common message for the party going into the midterms.
3. A stark shift in the Latino vote
Despite Trump's significant gains among Latino voters in 2024, this election showed promising shifts for Democrats. Winning candidates in Virginia and New Jersey garnered impressive support from Latino communities, signaling a possible realignment.
This is evident in places like Passaic County, New Jersey, where Sherrill's victory contrasted sharply with Trump's previous wins, bolstered by a campaign focused on economic issues.
4. Democratic differences were on display
The election night highlighted ideological diversity within the Democratic Party. While Mamdani ran on a progressive platform in New York, moderate Democratic candidates in New Jersey and Virginia emphasized more centrist policies.
This divergence suggests that Democrats will need to adapt their strategies to cater to different electorates across the country. Political experts advocate for a varied approach in candidate selection to better align with regional voter preferences.
