Billy Joel has expressed a positive outlook two months after being diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain condition. During a recent appearance on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, the legendary musician stated that while he is still addressing some balance issues associated with the disorder, he feels "good". Despite being diagnosed as having a brain disorder—which can sound daunting—Joel reassured his fans that he is coping well.
Earlier in May, Joel had to cancel several concert dates following advice from his doctors, who indicated that his NPH condition had worsened due to recent performances. NPH is an uncommon condition chiefly affecting individuals over the age of 60 and involves a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, which can lead to various complications, including impaired mobility, vision, and hearing.
In a heartfelt update shared via Instagram, Joel conveyed that he is undergoing specialized physical therapy to manage his condition and is determined to focus on his health. His wife, Alexis Joel, also expressed gratitude online for the prompt and proficient medical care they have received while remaining optimistic about her husband's recovery.
As a consequence of his diagnosis, Joel has had to cancel 17 shows across North America and Europe set for 2025 and 2026, with notable performances planned at venues such as Murrayfield in Edinburgh and Anfield in Liverpool. Known for his timeless hits including "Uptown Girl" and "Piano Man," the 76-year-old musician has been an enduring presence on stage, with a record-breaking residency at Madison Square Garden concluding just last year.
His last performance took place in February 2025, shortly before he announced his need to postpone his tour due to medical concerns requiring physical therapy associated with a recent surgery. Fans remain hopeful for the beloved artist's return to the stage as he prioritizes his health.
