Ferry blaze leaves 35 dead, dozens missing
The MV June Aster caught fire on Wednesday, 22 hours into its voyage from Manila to the popular tourist destination of Coron, Palawan. Rescue crews recovered 30 bodies from the wreckage and 43 passengers were rescued, many requiring medical attention. The coast guard reports that more than 50 people are currently unaccounted for, with ongoing search operations and a review underway of safety protocols and cargo conditions.
Philippine Coast Guard officials say the blaze likely began in the cargo hold, and initial interviews suggest several passengers were not wearing life vests. A survivor described frantic cries and panicked crowds as he was forced to escape, trampled by others in the flurry.
The vessel, built in 2002 and last inspected and certified in March, carried 117 passengers and 17 crew. Atienza Interisland Ferries, operator of the June Aster, has pledged cooperation with the investigation. The Philippine maritime authority is conducting a thorough inquiry into manifest discrepancies, cargo loading and crew response.
As authorities work to identify the missing, families mourn the tragedy. The Coast Guard spokesperson vowed ongoing efforts to recover remains and create closure for affected relatives.
