In brief

A 22‑year‑old man from Western Australia has been charged with planning a terrorist attack. Authorities say he sought online help in building explosives and weapons. The case follows charges against him for nine offences and could lead to a life sentence if he is convicted.

A 22‑year‑old man from Western Australia has been charged by authorities with preparing for a terrorist attack, the WA Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) announced on Friday.

Charges and Allegations

The man, who has remained unnamed, was first arrested in December 2025 and originally faced nine separate offences. Offences included possession of materials that could facilitate explosive devices, the planning of violent acts, and other related crimes.

Following further investigations, the JCTT added a tenth count. The new charge specifically addresses activities undertaken “in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts.” The additional charge reflects evidence that the suspect sought assistance on messaging platforms for expertise in explosive devices, military and tactical training, weapons manufacturing, combat techniques, and the creation of fake documents.

The JCTT said that the suspect’s online requests were part of a broader plan to assemble a weapon system capable of inflicting serious harm. The organization said it will present the full case in court and that the suspect faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if convicted.

The WA Joint Counter Terrorism Team is a partnership between the state police force, the Australian Federal Police, and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation. The team coordinates intelligence, investigation, and operational resources across Australia to counter extremist threats.

The case brings to light the growing concern over the use of social media and encrypted messaging services by individuals planning violent attacks. The JCTT’s findings suggest that the suspect engaged with known extremist groups and sought training in bomb-making techniques.

Local police in Perth are cooperating with federal investigators to trace the suspect’s digital footprints. Investigators have also tracked financial transactions that may have supported the acquisition of weapons components.

Because the charges touch on a range of offences, prosecutors plan to bring the case to trial in the Perth Criminal Court. The prosecution intends to demonstrate how the suspect’s actions fit the definition of terrorism under Australian law. If the court finds him guilty, the life sentence would be imposed with immediate effect, according to the JCTT’s statement.

The JCTT noted that the investigation remains ongoing, and further evidence may be uncovered. They also cautioned that the legal process will determine the final outcome of the case and that the suspect has the right to a fair trial.

The incident has prompted a review of Western Australia’s counter‑terrorism protocols, with state officials urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. The JCTT has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Australian communities from terrorist threats.
