In brief
Philippine authorities have declared that Elliot Eastman, a 26-year-old American residing in the Philippines, is likely deceased following his kidnapping. The Philippine National Police reported on Thursday that evidence from one of the suspects in custody suggests Eastman was killed the same day he was abducted, on October 17. A total of four men have been detained, while authorities continue to seek four additional suspects linked to the case.
Eastman, who had documented his experiences living on the island of Mindanao since May, was forcibly taken by armed men posing as police officers from his residence in the coastal town of Sibuco. Testimonies indicate he was shot twice during the encounter. Although his body has not been recovered, police speculate it was disposed of at sea following his death. The victim's kidnapping was reported by his father-in-law, revealing that intruders entered the home and restrained Eastman despite his attempts to flee. The FBI and international commentators have highlighted the recent history of kidnappings for ransom in the region, although incidents have decreased significantly over the past ten years as militant groups have diminished in power.Eastman's life in the Philippines had garnered attention through his YouTube channel, where he chronicled his daily life and unique experiences as the only foreign resident of Sibuco. Despite his fond declarations of love for his home and culture, the kidnapping has cast a shadow over the perceptions of safety for foreigners in the area, prompting warnings from several foreign governments regarding travel to southern Philippines.
