In brief

The ongoing war in Sudan has escalated dramatically, resulting in hundreds of civilian deaths and widespread humanitarian crises as both government forces and paramilitary groups intensify their attacks following the rainy season.

A significant uptick in violence in Sudan has resulted in catastrophic consequences for civilians, with reports indicating that hundreds have died in recent aerial bombings and vengeance-fueled assaults over the past week. The renewed fighting marks a troubling escalation in Africa's largest ongoing war, which has intensified as the seasonal rains come to an end.According to reports from activists and organizations dedicated to democracy, territories have exchanged hands, and notable figures within the military have switched allegiances. Paramilitaries are accused of sexual assaults, kidnappings, and murders of villagers as they navigate the contested rural regions. Adding to the complexity, a military cargo plane crashed in western Darfur with several Russian crew members reported onboard, showcasing the increasing involvement of foreign mercenaries in the conflict. The Sudanese military, after struggling to maintain control over substantial territories, appears to have regained some tactical advantages over the Rapid Support Forces (R.S.F.), its main adversary in this complex and protracted battle.Kholood Khair, director of the Confluence Advisory think tank, explained, "The fighting season has just restarted, and both sides want to jostle for an early advantage." The intensifying hostilities are set against a backdrop of severe humanitarian distress. Over 10 million individuals have fled their homes, and urgent crises of famine and rapid disease spread, including cholera and dengue fever, are emerging. As international calls grow for intervention, particularly from the United Nations to protect civilians, the plight of Sudan’s population deepens amid escalating violence.
