In brief

According to the latest 2024 Indian-American Survey conducted by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and YouGov, Indian Americans report growing optimism about India's future but express significant anxiety about the implications of a potential second Trump administration on U.S.-India ties. The survey, which included 1,206 respondents, highlights the differing political attitudes within the Indian-American community, revealing partisan divides and a marked preference for President Joe Biden's approach over Trump’s.

The survey points out that Indian Americans currently number over five million and have varied perspectives on U.S.-India relations. The findings show that a greater majority rated Biden’s handling of these ties more favorably than Trump’s past administration. The results also indicate that a hypothetical Kamala Harris administration is perceived as more beneficial for bilateral relations than a second Trump term. While Indian Americans maintain a mostly favorable view of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the survey also uncovers a concerning lack of awareness regarding recent controversies, including allegations surrounding a plot to assassinate an Indian dissident on U.S. soil. Only half of the respondents were aware of the indictment against an Indian intelligence officer connected to this allegation. The survey also illustrates a partisan split on international issues, such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with Democrats generally more sympathetic to Palestinian concerns compared to Republicans who lean towards pro-Israel viewpoints. Discussions around these matters seem to influence the political leanings and sentiments of the Indian-American demographic significantly.Interestingly, even as the Indian American community values their connection to Modi and the perceived positive direction of India, the survey indicates a majority of respondents are becoming more cautious about Trump’s policies and their consequences on the relationship between the U.S. and India. This shift raises questions about whether Indian Americans will continue to support the Democratic Party or if recent political shifts will impact their loyalties in the future.Overall, the survey paints a complex picture of Indian Americans, where selective engagement with political developments, combined with strong cultural bonds, influences their perceptions and responses to the changing dynamics in U.S.-India relations.
