In brief

Recent tornadoes have wreaked havoc across the southern United States, resulting in at least four deaths and extensive damage to infrastructure and homes as communities grapple with the aftermath.

On December 28, a series of tornadoes struck southern US states, including Texas, Mississippi, and North Carolina, leading to tragedies and destruction. Reports indicate that almost 40 tornadoes were confirmed over the weekend, leaving significant property damage and tens of thousands of residents without electricity. Mississippi recorded two deaths—one in Adams County and another in Lowndes County—while Texas and North Carolina each had one fatality. The toll also included numerous injuries reported across affected areas. In Mississippi, as of Monday morning, nearly 32,000 individuals remained without power, a decrease from the 100,000 reported during the peak of the storms. The National Weather Service highlighted the rarity of the tornado watch designation in Texas that was made for the December 28 event, citing a "particularly dangerous situation" due to the anticipated strength of the storms. The tornadoes in Texas resulted in significant destruction, particularly in Brazoria County, where a 48-year-old woman tragically lost her life and several others were injured. Montgomery County faced considerable damage, with around 300 structures affected, including 30 homes that were completely destroyed, as winds exceeded 145 mph. North Carolina’s victim, a 70-year-old man identified as Matthew Ronald Teeple, succumbed to injuries from a falling tree while driving. On average, the US sees approximately 800 tornadoes annually, claiming about 80 lives and causing around 1,500 injuries. However, as of November this year, the number of reported tornadoes soared to 1,762, marking the highest count since 2011. The response teams continue to work tirelessly to clear rubble and restore power as communities unite to recover from this deadly weather event.
