In a sobering revelation, recent research indicates that more than three million children worldwide succumbed to infections resistant to antibiotics in 2022. The study, led by experts in child health, highlights the alarming impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly in regions such as Africa and South East Asia.

AMR occurs when bacteria evolve and develop resistance to antibiotics, rendering these essential medications ineffective. It has emerged as one of the most significant public health threats globally. The findings are based on data compiled from reliable institutions including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank.

The report underscores a more than tenfold increase in drug-resistant infections among children within just three years, potentially exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic's impact on health systems. The surge in antibiotic consumption, often for non-critical cases, is raising concerns among health experts. Specifically, the use of "watch antibiotics"—medications typically reserved for severe infections—skyrocketed by 160% in South East Asia and 126% in Africa from 2019 to 2021.

As the use of these critical antibiotics increases, there are fewer alternatives for treating multidrug-resistant infections. The authors of the study stress the urgency of addressing AMR, as failure to do so could jeopardize decades of advancements in child health, especially in the world’s most vulnerable regions.

While the WHO labels AMR as a pressing global health issue, experts like Prof. Herb Harwell emphasize the complexity of the problem. There is a pressing need for improved immunization, water sanitation, and hygiene to prevent infections in the first place.

Dr. Lindsey Edwards, a microbiology lecturer at King's College London, has described the findings as an alarming spike in child mortality that should prompt immediate action from global health leaders.
