A former high-ranking official in the Russian military, Lt Gen Vadim Shamarin, has been sentenced to seven years in a maximum-security prison for accepting large sums in bribes. Arrested during a significant anti-corruption initiative within the Ministry of Defence, Shamarin faced accusations of receiving a total of 36 million roubles (approximately £331,000) from a telecommunications factory from 2019 to 2023. In exchange for these illicit payments, he allegedly facilitated the expansion of government contracts awarded to the firm. Following his arrest, Shamarin's lawyer reported that he was also barred from public service for seven years and stripped of his military rank, along with a confiscation of the bribe amount. His conviction is part of a broader corruption crackdown led by the Kremlin, which has seen the detention of other high-ranking Ministry of Defence officials as President Vladimir Putin attempts to improve the military's operational efficiencies amidst persistent struggles.
