In brief

The United States Embassy in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, has issued an urgent alert for an anticipated Russian air assault, coinciding with Ukraine's recent use of American-made missiles to strike Russian territory.

The warning was unprecedented, as it included a directive for embassy employees to shelter in place. This announcement came just a day after Ukraine successfully targeted a Russian ammunition depot in the Bryansk region using Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), lifting a prior restriction by President Biden on their use.Russian authorities have reacted strongly, with Foreign Minister Sergei V. Lavrov characterizing Ukraine's missile strike as a significant escalation in the conflict, declaring it a “qualitatively new phase of the Western war against Russia” and promising a forceful response. The U.S. embassy instructed American citizens to intensify their awareness of air raid signals, signaling heightened concerns with the ongoing drone and missile assaults faced daily by the citizens of Kyiv. An explosion was reported in the capital just before 8 a.m., resulting from air defenses downgrading an incoming drone, which subsequently ignited a fire in a residential structure. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties. In almost three years of conflict, Kyiv has endured thousands of alerts, totaling over 1,550 hours, equating to over two months of potential sheltering for residents. Records indicate that Russian strikes have intensified significantly, especially within the last year, with more than 2,500 missiles and drones targeting the city.As the threat from long-range assault drones equipped with thermobaric munitions grows, safety measures among residents include seeking refuge in lower levels of buildings and moving bedding away from windows. Ukrainian officials have reported these missiles often leave little time for warning, as they reach targets in minutes, posing an ongoing risk to civilians. For the last three months, Kyiv has faced nightly drone incursions, maintaining a state of alert among its populace.
