Jack Bech, who was in Dallas visiting relatives, recalls the last conversation he had with his brother, Martin "Tiger" Bech, a 28-year-old former Princeton alumnus who was in New Orleans celebrating the New Year. "It felt like just another chat," said Jack. "We were sharing meal details before the night took a tragic turn." These moments would mark the last connection Jack would have with his brother, who was among the victims killed when Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old army veteran, rammed his pick-up truck into crowds on Bourbon Street before being gunned down by police.
Though the FBI has stated they believe Jabbar, who had posted social media videos claiming allegiance to ISIS, acted alone, the pain and loss among the victims' families is palpable. Jack remembers his brother as his closest confidant and inspiration, vowing that their family will never be the same. Tiger's absence creates an ache that will be felt at every family gathering, but Jack insists his brother would want them to celebrate life, not mourn in grief.
Another victim, Matthew Tenedorio, a 25-year-old audio-visual technician, also lost his life in the attack. His family had implored him not to venture into New Orleans on New Year's Eve, but he chose to go out with friends. After the tragedy, they struggled to obtain crucial information regarding Matthew's fate amidst chaos. According to family member Christina Bounds, contact with local law enforcement has been nearly non-existent, adding to their anguish as they seek details about Matthew's last moments.
"We are left in limbo, and the lack of updates is infuriating," Bounds shared. "We have so many questions about what truly happened." In light of the challenge of upcoming funeral expenses, the family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign, made more difficult by the medical bills stemming from Matthew’s mother’s cancer treatment.
Matthew's cousin recalled the vibrant spirit of the young man, who was a kind-hearted soul known for bringing joy to those around him. "It's heartbreaking to think he lost his life to such senseless violence," lamented Zach Colgan, who emphasized the need for answers to help families find closure.
